Neither Heald nor Surratt, who is visually impaired, has a driver's license. The scooters, which have less than 50 cubic centimeters of piston displacement (a measure of the engine's power), can be operated without a license on North Carolina roads by riders age 16 or older. The tour took the friends four days to complete and used between four and five gallons of gasoline, all while traveling less than 30 mph. 'It's all about the challenge of getting there,' Heald said.

Mann has been lifting weights since his teens and says he is dedicated to personal spiritual discipline that includes daily prayer and meditation. 'I intend to continue along these lines for the years ahead.'
