Travis Long is a visual journalist for the News & Observer in Raleigh, NC.
Long started his career at his hometown newspaper in Inverness, FL as a senior in high school and has worked as a staff photographer at the Athens (Ga.) Banner-Herald and the Daytona Beach News-Journal.
His work has garnered dozens of awards including recognition from The National Press Photographers Association’s Best of Photojournalism Contest, The Casey Medals for Meritorious Journalism, The Webbies, the Society for News Design, APME and several state press associations.
In June of 2007 Long became the first photographer at the News & Observer to transition from still photography to video full-time.
Travis has always considered himself a backyard journalist. He says telling the stories of ordinary and extraordinary people in his own community gives him the greatest satisfaction.
